History of the Project

"St. Mark’s is an incubator that turns a boy’s dreams into the accomplishments and character of a man. We want to continue what Eugene McDermott and Cecil Green started nearly 60 years ago.”
–Steve Winn ’64
Fifty years ago, St. Mark’s built the McDermott-Green Mathematics & Science Quadrangle to inspire a new generation of thinkers and explorers. This generation included a young man who, after seeing St. Mark’s newly-constructed science center, asked his parents if he could transfer to 10600 Preston Road. His parents agreed and, after graduating with the Class of 1964, Steve Winn went on study engineering and founded several successful technology businesses. Now, Steve wants to provide inspiration to the next generation of Marksmen.

"I’ve seen what you are capable of in the past 50 years," Steve said at a meeting of the St. Mark’s faculty and staff on October 28, 2014. "Now, it’s time to think about the next 50 years and the 5,000 young dreamers who will delight us by graduating from this institution and change our future forever."

In front of the very teachers who will shape those Marksmen, Steve announced a gift of $10,000,000 from the Winn Family Foundation to serve as the catalyst for a new state-of-the-art science center. The future Winn Family Science Center will once again put St. Mark’s at the forefront of science education in America.

Since then, the St. Mark’s community has rallied behind this endeavor. Over a two-year period, more than 55 families pledged an additional $32 million to surpass the $40 million goal necessary for project approval by the Board of Trustees. In May 2017, the community gathered on campus and celebrated the groundbreaking for the future of science at St. Mark's.
